Emeralds from the Panjshir Valley (translated to "valley of the five lions") are extremely limited in supply due to the precarious nature of the high altitude mines and extreme weather. Mining techniques are crude and by hand so it is quite rare to find gem quality material, especially larger crystals.

Naturally, due to current events in Afghanistan the future of this material is uncertain though there is evidence of this gem being traded since the early 1700s.

Panjshir emeralds draw some similarities to Columbian emeralds having green and blue hues and are regarded widely as some of the best emerald in the world.
